Progress report on 2.1 maintenance/extensibility draft

Hi,

Well, until Thursday, things were roughly on track to have a draft out
early next week. When I tried to open the .doc file, the application
froze and remained unresponsive.

It was possible to recover the text minus formatting, but unfortunately
the format work of the past week was lost. So I will have to redo this.
[My IT department is going to try a recovery/repair application but I am
not counting on success.]

I plan to turn off change tracking, to omit appendix insertions until
the last thing, and mainly check the errata changes and reformat the
extensibility section.

Messaging has already abandoned .doc for version 3 and is using docbook
and the free xxe to edit. Messaging had reached the point that the .doc
file was so flaky it was unusable. I fear we may also be arriving at
that point.

Suggestions are welcome.
