Subject: ebXML IIC TC -- materials from face-to-face meeting
All, Please find attached the following documents related to the face-to-face meeting that the ebXML IIC TC held in San Jose on August 14. We can discuss these further in the conference call on Monday, September 10. Please also remember to send in your candidacy for the open positions by close-of-business Friday, September 7, so that we may discuss and start the voting procedure on Monday. 1. List of attendees (provided by Jeff Eck of GE(GXS); errors and omissions are mine); please let me know if you were inadvertently left off; 2. Revised charter document (thanks to Steve Yung for writing this down); 3. Structure of the TC (chair, co-chair, editor, secretary, various subgroups, and liaisons) (thanks again to Steve); 4. Presentation by Iwasa of Fujitsu on TC activities; 5. Presentation by David Fischer/Rik Drummond of Drummond Group (DGI) on DGI's conformance activities. The charter and structure documents capture the discussions in those areas quite well. Some discussion ensued after Iwasa's presentation on the need for APIs, and if so, at what level. The issue here is that APIs may facilitate coordinated testing, e.g. logging and interpretation of test results and specification of higher-level tests, but the argument can also be made that we should just test the messaging specifications at the lowest level, and not require the adherence to an API (in order to give implementers a chance to do an implementation of their choice). Pete Wenzel of SeeBeyond gave us a good overview of RosettaNet conformance testing. We heard from David Fischer and Rik Drummond of DGI. There was substantial discussion by those present on what the interaction, if any, should be between the DGI activities and those of the ebXML IIC TC. DGI made the point that ebXML interoperability activities could get a headstart from the work that DGI is doing (pretty much along the lines of what they did w.r.t. the AS1 and AS2 standard). Concerns were raised by some about the IP issues involved (i.e., how proprietary are the tests that DGI has produced?, can they be leveraged by ebXML IIC TC?, etc.) and also about the cost. Those present resolved not to take any action on this subject for now. However, it is an issue that we will need to resolve, and that we will need to get perspectives on from other parties (OAG, e.g., is a strong endorser of the DGI ebXML interoperability activity). Jeff Eck captured the essence for his participating in ebXML IIC TC as follows: Why am I here: · The OASIS ebXML IIC TC established itself to provide test plans that companies can use to verify their ebXML software complies with the ebXML specifications. Regarding 3rd party companies providing ‘conformance/interoperability’ testing: · The OASIS ebXML IIC TC is pleased that companies are promoting the use of ebXML internationally. The OASIS ebXML IIC TC is in the process of defining conformance and interoperability test plans. -Philippe Philippe De Smedt Chief Systems Architect Agentis International, Inc. ebXML IIC TC chair pdesmedt@agentisinternational.com (925) 746-5019
