Subject: Re: [ebxml-msg-comment] ebXML 'Acknowledgement' vs 'Acknowledgment'

Gait, Dale, Dave - thanks for your responses!

Gait - I agree with your assessment for ebBPSS - ie that '
ReceiptAcknowledgement' and 'AcceptanceAcknowledgement' are the correct
spelling since that's what's in the XSD. However, I'm not so sure about
your ebMS coment. You refer to section 8.6 and line 2502 of the ebms.pdf
which uses the spelling without the 'e'. The note immediately above the
schema sample on line 2355 states that where there are inconsistencies
between the spec and the schema then the spec prevails. However, the spec
is sufficiently ambiguous (refer lines 1138, 1141, 1143, 1172, 1173, 1175,
2501 which all have different spelling of the same 'Acknowledgement
element') to warrant the clarification.

Emails from all three of you seem to indicate that the XSD prevails though
and that the spelling should be 'AcceptanceAcknowledgement' and
'ReceiptAcknowledgement' so we will use this spelling.

Dale - I will post this to the ebBPSS list as well.

Dave - I appreciate your offer to table this at the ebXML-CORE TC meeting.

Thanks
Andy

Re: [ebxml-msg-comment] ebXML 'Acknowledgement' vs 'Acknowledgment'

Hi Andrew,

not being a native English speaker myself I'll refrain from the spelling
war between UK and US.
However, in terms of what is right in the XML documents, the answer is
fairly simple:
whatever the governing (normative) XSD or DTD says it is.

For ebMS, that means the proper spelling is Acknowledgment (see section
8.6 and line 2502 of the ebms.pdf)
For ebBPSS, the proper spellings are: ReceiptAcknowledgement and
AcceptanceAcknowledgement (line 3045 and 3149 of the ebbpss.pdf, the
ebbp-2.0.4.xsd appears to concur)

Deviation will lead to non-conformance and non-interoperability.

kind regards,
Gait Boxman
