Second Successful Use of Internet Voting During Swiss Federal
Referendum
European Communities, eGovernment News In November 2004, voters in 8 municipalities in the state of Geneva were for the second time able to vote over the Internet in a federal referendum. No technical or security problems were recorded, but the effect on voter turnout remains unclear. According to the Geneva authorities, 3,755 citizens chose to cast their vote through the state's e-voting website during this seventh Internet-based ballot -- the second to be held for a federal referendum. Registered voters received a card from their local authority explaining the three voting options, i.e. online, postal or in person. The card included a tamper-proof, single-use personal ID code and a PIN code, which allowed voters to securely log on to the virtual ballot box from any computer connected to the Internet. http://europa.eu.int/ida/en/document/3607/194 |
