Subject: RE: [election-services] Newcastle uses Twitter for election result

Paul,

OK - this really is nuts!

Notice anyone can setup a Twitter account and start posting messages with #FBE09 in them.

Something like:

STOP PRESS: Re-count: Con 6%, BNP 34.1%, Lib Dem 33.9%, Lab 33.1% #FBE09

Tor Feng, BNP, is duly elected for the Fenham Ward of the Newcastle City Council #FBE09

I'm sure the local folks mean well up there in Newcastle - reaching out to the people - but this would not pass legal council here in the USA for one.

That is why I was saying you have to post to an accredited reputable site - and then reference to that.

Thanks, DW

David,

Follow the link! They use a message per candidate, one to announce the winner and a summary message showing percentages. Remember - these are first past the post elections - nothing complicated. Here are some of the messages:

Con 6%, BNP 27%, Lib Dem 33.9%, Lab 33.1% #FBE09

Mitzi Emery, Liberal Democrats, is duly elected for the Fenham Ward of the Newcastle City Council #FBE09

Mitzi Emery, Lib Dem, 1049 votes #FBE09

Regards

Paul

Team,

Reality check - Twitter limits its blog entries to 140 characters.

Therefore de rigour there is to use simpleURL's that resolve to the real content.

Therefore from our perspective this is really just a messaging push/pull mechanism that delivers location of the actual content - and that can be standard EML 510 with a stylesheet to render in browser.

Contrary wise, as John and Paul know, when it come to localization Newcastle is probably an extreme case - noone else in England can probably read what the results say....and they can say it all in 140 characters or less- e.g.

Eee t' ladd did grand eh?  10,973
Sum outhr clloo'n                791

Thanks, DW

I think we are all agreeing that our EML results can be used by any end point to easily convert the result into whatever display form it chooses.  That is one of the strengths of a published, open standard -- others know it and can use it.  Our US news agencies should be doing the same, if we ever got all the players to put out EML.

HI,

I agree here. Twitter is just one of the possible things that a 510 can be transformed into. We have used it as input for a nice flash application that showed bar charts and nice eye candy, we have also transformed it into HTML, so Twitter is just another thing we convert a 510 into.

I don't see anything that needs to be added. I am having a frustrating day today. I might just spend some time making an EML to Twitter tool. Post a 510 and it gets parsed and uploaded.

Threat or opportunity to write an EML to Twitter converter?

Twitter is just a channel. A strength of EML is that it is channel independent, so the more channels people use the better - they just generate one 510 and use some stylesheets to convert it for the different channels.

This is a very interesting development and may be a threat to us on the results reporting side?
