Elysa et al.,

Catching up on emails after being away last week. I don't think the topic of standards work is going to draw attendees. That doesn't mean we can't incorporate the material. We just have to market this differently. Thus, we need to change the title and description. In the United States, many public safety managers are either hesitant to use WEA or could be doing a better job using it. If I had a day to present at IAEM, I'd startÂwith a title like "Everything You Need to Know About Wireless Emergency Alerts But We're Afraid to Ask" or "Getting Up and Running with Wireless Emergency Alerts". That is, I want the attendees to feel like they are walking away with applicable knowledge that meets a need of theirs.Â

Friends,

Â

We decided in our meeting yesterday that we would continue with our plans to have a pre-conference training session at the IAEM Nov 12. Our session is set for Saturday from 9-5 and will include a provided lunch.

Â

The program can be found at Pre/Post-Conference Training (iaem.org)

Â

The following is posted on the site:

Â

Mobile Alerting: Reach 90% of the Endangered Population in 7 Seconds â 1 Day
Sponsored by OASIS Emergency Management Group
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ$75 â Registrants attending the conference at the full, speaker or student registration rates.
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ$150 â Registrants not attending the IAEM Annual Conference

Â

Â

I have asked the staff at IAEM how we can do a strong outreach to the community and will let you know when I hear back. The OASIS Emergency Member Section is providing funds for a booth and this preconference session. We do not have many people registered yet but need to get more folks here. We also need to develop the full agenda. I would like to include an overview of the EMTC work (me), overview of CAP (Jacob), perhaps an update from NWS (Mike) to discuss 10 years of WEA and the lessons learned then get into the details of the technology supporting WEA.

Â

The current abstract is as follows:

Â

Abstract for Mobile Alerting Practices-rbedit 4 IAEM

What is Mobile Alerting?

Alerting the Public through their personal devices reaches 90 percent of the targeted population in a direct personal way within about 7 seconds. Using a device normally within armâs reach from them puts possibly life-saving alerts in their hands in the quickest way possible today.

The owner buys this device, charges it every night and promptly repairs any faults all at their own expense. Visitors to the country also bring their own personal devices with them, but to ensure that they work as intended, sufficient standardization that works reliably across boundaries is needed.

However, reaching such devices requires the mobile network to which they are currently attached. This, in turn depends on their current location. Very complex Mobility Management Technology is needed to facilitate this, but it does enable the user to roam freely all over the world with their device. This fact is what defines a Mobile Network as opposed to the fixed network and accordingly defines âMobileâ Alerting Practices.Â

Â

Happy to have your input on a stronger abstract that will get the attention of the local EMs that really need to understand this technology to keep their communities safe.

Â

Please reply to this email with your thoughts.Â

Â

Best,

Elysa Jones
