Subject: RE: [emergency-msg] Pre-Face-to-Face Meeting Looks unlikely
Tim, I agree that we not eat up F2F time discussing tools. I think we need to either pick one or have those doing the "DOM" editing use the one(s) they're most comfortable with. The second approach will limit the ability to share editing responsibility for single "DOM"s, but it's how we've done it in the past. We have a specific urgent need and a lot of work to do. Let's get the diagrams and the spec done and in public comment, and then raise the tool discussion up to the TC (or maybe OASIS overall?) to consider the benefits of applying a single UML tool. Regardless, however, we would need to opt for the Community (Free) Edition of VP unless they might be persuaded to donate some copies for us to use. However, I did not have a worthwhile result in my attempt to persuade IBM to duplicate their prior donation of Rational tools to another TC. They eventually stopped responding when it was clear that their attempts to foist me off onto a sales rep were as ineffective at securing a sale as my attempts at soliciting a donation. In order words, I won't bother with it again, but I would be happy as a clam if anyone else were able to get VP or MagicDraw or even old Big Blue to make such a donation. The file format issue has always been the major failing of UML, and XMI, even when it works, suffers from the mismatch between vendor implementations of the standard. It is one of the reasons, oddly enough, for my goal of inching us toward an MDA approach backed up by reference implementations of object libraries. IT"S one way to get good operational interoperability, and severely discourage vendor implementations that are just a few key steps short of genuine interoperability, but that are very effective arguments for vendor-specific solutions that pay lip service to standards.
