Subject: RE: [emergency-rim] Reminder: Meeting Today
Rex and all, Sorry, I will not be able to attend the RIM meeting today. However, I thought I would share some thoughts about work that relates to your message below with respect to "... the evolving domain of the built-environment, e.g. interior spaces, and the transition/interface from Geospatial to Building-specific information." You might find it interesting to know that OGC has been working on to solve similar issues and to create standards to address the built-environment through their CityGML standards work. This effort has included collaboration with Architecture and Engineering community in 2005 and even earlier to integrate with the Building Information Model (BIM) standards that carries very detail information about the construction of buildings, down to the lowest level of details required for design and construction. This collaboration has been demonstrated whereby geographic information has been brought together with CAD model data to produce a detailed 3-dimensional view that transitions from geospatial 3-D (geographic locations and CityGML 3-D structures to building interiors. I can provide some additional information, resources and discussion to follow-up later if there is interest. Even though I haven't had time to complete the next stage in the ValueList Ontology, we can continue our conversations on the merits of various kinds of ontologies, and I can relate how this effort reflects a number of other applications and capabilities being explored in NCOIC and locally in the FEMA Grant work for Marin County Fire.Chiefs Association. The fact that is that our work needs to extend over a wider domain that includes as-is data that conforms to no specific categorization or classification schemes. This is the same issue that affects the evolving domain of the built-environment, e.g. interior spaces, and the transition/interface from Geospatial to Building-specific information. This is not a domain that any one group from the Contractors and Architects community to Real Estate Owner/Operators to Emergency Management is going to provide the end-all be-all standard. In fact, this is a direct challenge to our ValueList and Supporting Elements structure.
