Hmmn...I'm always cautious about letting a layout drive the data.  Maybe I wouldn't go as far as to say that Twitter is the flavor the month (because it is very popular), but what if another service comes along making 240 characters or some other number becomes the norm?  I think that changing this would be the case of letting the tail wag the dog.
