Subject: [members] Brooks and Cover named OASIS distinguished Contributors

OASIS is pleased to announce the selection of two new Distinguished Contributors.

The OASIS Distinguished Contributor designation is awarded to a select group of OASIS members who have made significant contributions to the advancement of open standards.  Their work is formally recognized with this designation to bear witness to their exemplary work.

Rex Brooks

An active OASIS member for more than 15 years, Rex Brooks is a founding member of the Emergency Management TC and a driving force in its ecosystem.  Rexâs experience and education bring a vital and impressive combination of skills to OASIS, enabling him to serve simultaneously as a Systems Architect, Ontology Builder, Emergency Management Specialist, Software Designer, Standards & Open Architecture Educator, Articulate Spokesperson, and Visionary He holds the following leadership roles:

â Co-Chair, Emergency Management Adoption TC

â Chair, EM and Notification Subcommittee

â Chair, EM Reference Information Model Subcommittee

â Chair, EM Adoption Collateral & Documents Subcommittee

â Secretary, EM TC

â Voting Member, EM Steering Committee

Rex has been involved in the OASIS and emergency management community most of the time as an independent consultant, his standards work most often done without corporate support.  His willingness and ability to contribute to the extraordinary work in the Emergency TC (and related) has had a very positive influence on the Emergency suite of standards which are adopted around the world and are saving lives and helping manage disaster response every day.

Robin Cover

It is without contest that very few people in the industry have had a broader and more positive impact on the standards world than Robin Cover.  While Robin recently concluded his 21-year career with OASIS, his positive impact preceded his time at OASIS and extended well beyond the scope of his "day-job" with us.

Robin improved hundreds of specification development efforts both inside and outside of OASIS with his process guidance and profound understanding of structured information.  He was that constant guiding light showing the world how collaboration can make the best communities better and their deliverables better still. From his early work in SGML, his many years maintaining the renowned reference website Cover Pages and his work with OASIS TCs, Robin always helped us understand what is important and how to balance community goals with business goals through quality specification development.

One OASIS committee chair said:

âI had the honour to drink from the fountain of Robinâs knowledge (his work inspired my studies for a life), to feel âprotectedâ when he was monitoring the work of âmyâ TCs, to take enthusiasm from his underpinning, to have the courage from his vision to go beyond and to accept challenges. THANKS ROBIN, you don't know how many times your support was so fundamental for going ahead, making good outcomes and standards, being a better person.â

Rex and Robin join their peers in the Distinguished Contributors hall of fame [1] and are eligible for the benefits of this designation in perpetuity.

The consortium extends its greatest appreciation to all our Distinguished Contributors for so fully serving the mission of OASIS and reminding us all of what is possible.
