Dear SGIP Member:

Today, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), launches a public forum to solicit views on questions pertaining to the consumer interface to the nation’s evolving “smart” electric power grid.  Jump-started by a federal investment of $10.5 billion under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Smart Grid will enable two-way flows of electricity and information.

In the Smart Grid, consumers will be active participants in the power system.  They will have new tools for obtaining, using, and managing energy. The Executive Branch is considering ways to ensure that the consumer interface to the Smart Grid achieves the desired goal of providing all consumers with the information they need to control and optimize their energy use.

Using the blog format, OSTP and NIST hope to generate constructive discussion on a number of questions related to the customer interface to the Smart Grid. Concluding on March 12, the forum will focus on three interface topics central to the consumer participation in the Smart Grid.  The forum was announced in a notice that appeared in the Feb. 19 Federal Register (http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2010/pdf/2010-3251.pdf).

George Arnold, NIST's national coordinator for Smart Grid interoperability, kicks off the on-line conversation with a piece on "Ensuring a Positive Customer Connection to the Smart Grid."
