Block Rate: A rate structure where per unit energy prices vary for each successive block of energy consumed.
Time of Use (TOU) Rate A rate structure where the amount charged per unit (kWh or kW) varies according to the time of day of electricity consumption. Utilities can set up TOU rates based on Time of day, Seasons of the year, Holidays, etc. and include different tiers (such as On Peak, Off Peak, Mid Peak)
TOU tiers can be expressed as nominal prices or relative prices.
e.g.
Time Tier (level) 0-400 kWh > 400 kWh
00:00-06:00 1/4 $0.05 $0.12
06:00-15:00 2/4 $0.10 $0.17
15:00-20:00 3/4 $0.20 $0.27
20:00-24:00 1/4 $0.05 $0.12
Each tier within the block rate structure can have a different set of Time of Use Tier values
