Energy at 6:00am and Energy at 3:00pm are not the same product as their composition of generation mix, transmission path, and distribution path is different. In fact, there may not be Energy at 3:00pm no matter what price is offered. Despite the composition, the unit of Energy delivered at 6:00am and 3:00pm provides the same potential for use, but they are valued quite differently both on the production side and the consumption side during the 24-hour day, and hence this construct allows for that.

Analogies to coffee and other non-energy commodities simply do not work. The coffee at 6:00am and 3:00pm would only be the same if all the production variables were identical (such as barista, bean/quantity, water/quantity, length of time since brew cycle complete). Otherwise, why do we prefer and value certain shops, certain varities of coffee, certain types of water, and certain degrees of freshness.
