OASIS announces eMIX TC

OASIS Members Form Committee to Define Standards for Exchanging Energy Market Price and Product Information 

Microsoft, Constellation Energy, CPower, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), EnerNoc, Southern California Edison, TIBCO, U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and Others Collaborate on Open Standards for Price and Product Communication

Boston, MA, USA; 5 January 2010 –  The international consortium, OASIS, has formed a new group to define open standards for exchanging energy price and product characteristics, including availability and schedules to support the free and effective exchange of information. The new OASIS Energy Market Information Exchange (eMIX) Technical Committee will help enable and expand efficient markets, satisfying the growing demand for lower-carbon, lower-energy buildings, net zero-energy systems, and supply-demand integration. An international project, eMIX has been identified as a central deliverable for the U.S. government's Smart Grid initiative to create a smart and secure electric power grid using open standards.

"Businesses, homes, electric vehicles and the power grid itself will benefit from automated and timely communication of energy price, characteristics, quantities, and related information," said David Holmberg, a NIST engineer who works on communication of building system data to outside partners. "We believe this work, which engages several standards setting organizations, represents a critical part of the overall roadmap of standards for the Smart Grid."

"eMIX will focus on methods of exchanging market information that leverage the consistency, transparency, and security aspects of existing e-commerce standards," said Edward Cazalet, co-chair of the OASIS eMIX Technical Committee. "We are definitely not attempting to determine market operations or structures themselves."

"eMIX will work closely with the OASIS Energy Interoperation Technical Committee, which develops Web services-based information and communication models for exchanging price, reliability, and emergency signals and information on energy market participation (such as bids), load predictability, and generation," explained William Cox, who serves as co-chair of both Committees.  "We will be working closely with others engaged in the NIST Smart Grid initiative, including NAESB and UCAIug."

Participation in the eMIX Technical Committee is open to all interested parties, including: utility companies; energy market participants (retail, wholesale, curtailment, forward and futures trading markets); independent system operators (ISOs); regional transmission organizations (RTOs); aggregators of energy provision; generators; and providers of Smart devices. Archives of the Committee's work will be accessible to both members and non-members, and OASIS will offer a mechanism for public comment.
