Toby, all,

·         Line 35 "that market"

o   A VEN has a "market that consists of market contexts" (line 17) it can participate in, that is, the sum of all market opportunities/programs.

o   The registrar could be an OpenADR Alliance server that knows all about the DR programs nationwide, but maybe not all the ISO markets, and certainly not the local market opportunities available to the VEN.

o   So, then, what is "that market" in line 35? It can only be the market that the VTN knows about, and not necessarily the sum total of market contexts that the VEN might participate in.

·         I guess in practice a vendor of some equipment that hosts a VEN has some idea of the uses of that VEN, or the market contexts that the VEN can participate in, or the resources beneath the VEN, and instructions for which registrars should be contacted. Or perhaps there is a need for a registrar of registrars and the kinds of markets they represent.

o   So, then, a VEN comes online and wants to find market contexts. If it is an OpenADR Alliance certified device it will be directed to the O-A registrar and get the info it needs, “Here are the DR programs (that I know about) that you can register for.”

·         At this point, some intelligent person has to decide which programs make sense for the VEN—which market opportunities or DR programs make sense for the VEN, and then configure the VEN and grid behind it to participate in those market contexts.

o   There could be DR programs that require enrollment of specific kinds of resources behind the VEN: the PV, the PEV, the Load, and it may even be required by law that you (the VEN) participate in this market context and thus there is nothing to configure by the customer—rather, you plug it in, enter the URL for the registrar and everything is automated after that—enrollment included.

o   In other cases for a homeowner, for example, the message back from the registrar might lead to an exchange where the VEN user interface offers the homeowner a set of options about programs opportunities and benefits and waits for homeowner selection. Then the VEN enrolls as directed with the options as indicated by the homeowner.

o   For the larger C&I customer, there will likely be no specific resources to enroll, rather just the “results are everything”/ deliver the DR/ deliver the Generation approach that requires sophisticated energy management of the grid behind the VEN.

Thanks,
David
