Subject: minutes from phone call 20050722

Present: Norm, Lauren, Mark, Jirka, Paul, Mary,

Everyone voted yes on the CS. Norm to update the spec to include this
information.

Norm will produce the PDF for the spec.

Norm will dig up his "what are catalogs for" document.

Potentially could use ER for WSDL files?? Mark will talk to people at
RedHat about potential web service applications. Lauren will talk to
Marc Hadley and Tony Coates next week about this as well. There must
be real-world apps for using URIs to retrieve resources.

We should try to use the word "resource" rather than entity.
"Entity" is the more formal word for what in the web world is called
a resource.
what's an entity - an entity is what the web world calls a resource,
e.g., a file, an image, something at the end of a URI, a stylesheet
what does it mean to resolve an entity - what is really meant is to
resolve an entity reference. You have information about something,
and entity resolution resolves that reference into something that the
application can access
why is this called a catalog - it's the listing of mappings from the
references to entities to the resources that can be accessed
what sort of entities can I use an entity resolver for - DTDs,
schemas, stylesheets, other docs you're including with XInclude, any
time you have a URI for a resource and you want to map that to a
different copy or version of that resource (perhaps local)
what is an entity manager - this is the part of the application that
uses the catalog to actually get the requested resource
how do I use an entity resolver to cache - you can use a catalog to
map from URIs in documents to copies from a trusted source. See
Norm's paper for more details
SAX resolves relative URIs problem - use the systemSuffix or put the
absolute URIs in your catalog
XInclude question - refers to documents it's going to include through
a URI and you can map those in the catalog to any resource that you
want
zzz help - docbook-apps, libxml, apache-commons, for products go to
product support from the company
can I publish my catalog on the web and allow other people to use it?
Yes - this is one use case for the delegate entries
when do I use system and when do I use uri - you use system for
system identifiers and uri for everything else. System identifiers
are carefully defined in XML so the system entry matches that
definition - used for DTDs, XML entities, and notations
how can I use the catalog to map XML schema namespaces to file
locations - many apps dereference a schema namespace to try to get
information about the schema; this may or may not work. This was the
usecase for RDDL. More to come on this one....
can catalogs be used for other artifacts? yes, anything that can be
dereferenced from a URI
yes, the file format is extensible - use another namespace
where can I get a list of applications that support catalogs -
include link

we should include an example of a catalog - Norm will try to
construct a small DocBook example.

Norm has still to look at the test suite.

Mary will send the templates for the home page and the FAQ.

We will hold the vote to go to OASIS standard by email; it has to be
finished by Aug 12 to meet the Sep 1, so I will send out the vote
around Aug 5.

Next meeting to go over material to persuade people to vote for the
standard: August 23 at 9 am Pacific, noon Eastern.

Lauren
