Subject: RE: [forest] FW: David Steinhardt @Idealliance (papinet)
Peter,
Thanks for your email. I think that it is
important that you realise that we had extensive discussions with WoodX and
PapiNet, before coming to OASIS. This was not because we were less happy with
the services that OASIS provide, rather that PapiNet offered a better industry
fit as it was already involved with the forest sector, albeit primarily with
paper. Following a lengthy series of discussions with the WoodX group, which
were looking very positive, Steve and I made a presentation to the PapiNet
Central Working Group where we covered the two standards and their application
in industry. We felt that this had been very positively received. We were
somewhat surprised, therefore, when we received a very categoric 'not
interested' response from PapiNet several weeks later. This made it quite clear
that they were no longer interested in pursuing discussions about harmonisation
at this time. We then made the decision to go with OASIS, which had always been
our fallback position in the event of the PapiNet discussions
failing.
I think, therefore, that we need to spend
time now developing and embedding our two standards in industry, and the time to
approach PapiNet/WoodX again will be some time in the future. We have always
said that we will be very happy to work with them, and are preparing our eFIDS
FAQ to address this issue just now. Given their earlier response, it might be
more appropriate to wait to see if they are prepared to initiate the opening
of discussions again, rather than have us cover ground we have already been
over.

Roger

However, I am not sure if this is what you, as the TC, would want me to do. Also, should we talk to them, I would have three questions: a) what do you collectively want as the outcome b) when is the right time to have the conversation and c) do we need to prepare any material specifically for them?
I would very much appreciate your advice. Thank you.
Best Regards, Peter

I just had a conversation with Lane Warshaw, Senior Director of Strategy at liaison.com (http://www.liaison.com/). Liaison is an IT company founded by Boise, Georgia-Pacific, International Paper, MeadWestvaco, Weyerhaeuser, and Morgan Stanley. Lane is on the Board of Papinet/WoodX. He suggested I talk to David Steinhard as Idealliance is the SDO for Papinet (http://www.idealliance.org/activities/#supply) :
papiNet: Open Global Standards for the Paper & Forest Products Industries Working Group papiNet, developed by the papiNet Working Group, is the global initiative to develop, maintain and promote the implementation of standard electronic transaction standards to facilitate the flow of information amongst the parties engaged in the buying, selling, and distribution of forest, paper and wood products. Chair: Steve Lanzi, Bowater Vice Chairs: Douglas McArthur, UPM-Kymmene Editor: Art Colman, Drybridge Consulting Staff Contact: David Steinhardt Official Web Site: http://www.papinet.org/
papiNet Publication Paper Implementation Group Serves as the implementation team for the papiNet specification in the publication papers segment. Chair: Bruce Schuster, International Paper Staff Contact: David Steinhardt
I would think we should talk to them about the Forest Industries TC, particularly eFIDS.
Any advice you an offer would be most appreciated.
