Subject: [humanmarkup] dworking definition for artifact(artifacts)

The Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus (http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabulary/aat/index.html) has the shortest and (perhaps) least problematic definition for the term artifact (plural: artifacts), "Objects made, modified, or used by  humans."  This fits in both the archaeological and anthropological contexts, and could easily be incorporated into the base schema definition.
(Derived from Hole and Heizer 1977; see reference below).
