Subject: Article: Novell Rollout Includes Single-Sign-On
Here's an article worth noting, INHO. Novell is introducing a cross-platform rollout of its next generation of Nterprise Networking tools that will service Linux as well as Windows and includes a version of what I believe will become the ubiquitous use of a federated (i.e. any trusted service certifier) LDAP-based Single-Sign-On identity authentication/authorization system. I'm not suggesting that the rest of the article is especially interesting, unless you happen to interested in enterprise networking tools as someone other than an end-user. This is the beginning of a wider use of this kind of user identity verification. This is of interest to us, as SAML, WSRP, and XCBF Are Ratified as OASIS Standards, because the window of opportunity to begin working on a Human Preferences Profile Markup Language (HPPML) is opening. This is actually of somewhat more immediate applicability than our other SC efforts, although some aspects of HPCDML that play into XCBF (eXtensible Common Biometric Format) can also apply to Preferences Profiles as part of a HumanML-Enhanced extension of Single-Sign-On. This can be used to serve us in that we can make HPPML able to provide both increased security through greater physical identity authentications AND Preferences Profiles to combat Spam by going Spam one better and giving individuals control over the distribution of their Preferences Profiles (and other more intimate information such as medical histories) with specific personalization rules for what kinds of information/offers will be acceptable or encouraged AND can be made to strengthen the barriers to unwanted and unsolicited offers by giving very specific terminology tools for preferences filters (finally making filters more efficient than not) while actually inviting offers that accompany and enhance valuable information in product and service areas of particular vocational or avocational interest to individuals. This is, unfortunately, I believe, a case of USE IT OR LOSE IT. Either we do this, or the advertising, marketing, market-research, public relations, COMMUNICATIONS industry certainly WILL, (though not in the medical histories arena unless we are foolish enough to allow the pharmaceuticals industry greater access to our information than is already allowed--and that alone is sufficient motivation for me to oppose it) AND they will certainly not have it in their minds to provide such add-ons to single-sign-on IDs as anything but revenue generators period. The handwriting is now on the walls.
