Subject: Discussion of SIOC modules, etc
Greetings! While I enjoyed today's meeting I would find it helpful to have detailed discussions of substantive matters on the email list. That would make the conversation easier to follow as well as making it possible to formulate detailed examples and to consult references. For example, I think Laura and Deirdre had a very good point when they said modeling decisions *require looking at actual data* and not simply deciding such matters in the abstract. The outcome? We continued to discuss matters in the abstract. I realize that is a limitation of conference calls, that it isn't possible to suddenly produce data for everyone to review, not to mention everyone having the time to review data. But that is an advantage of email discussion lists. Someone, perhaps Laura or Deirdre, can suggest that actual data needs to be examined. Someone else can suggest a data set and then we can all take some time to review the same data set. That grounds our discussion in a common data set (first advantage) and allows us to focus an agenda for discussion only on those areas that are actually in question. (second advantage) That is we don't go over matters that are not disputed by anyone in the conversation. Not to mention that having written discussions will make it easier to track the development of ideas as they mature for inclusion in the draft. Hope everyone is having a great day!
