Subject: RE: [ihc] Corporate Sponsor

Hi Sally,

I hadn’t really thought about it that way. I will do some “investigat’in” and see if anything looks promising.

Ed makes a very good point.

A variation on a "corporate sponsor" is a foundation who would be willing to underwrite the effort, especially a foundation that is backed by corporations who have an interest in improving the health care landscape in the US.

One of the reasons health care is viewed as an intractable issue is the belief that a change will rearrange the winners and losers not resolve the problems. For this reason I think the lead has to be taken by an organization that is not directly impacted by the health care issue, has credibility with the some of the big players, eg government, GM, airlines,  insurance companies, and can attract others to bring their expertise, money and influence to the effort to solve what is obviously a probem. The scope and cause being a function of your perspective.

I think OASIS is in a terrific position to bring the open source technical expertise in an alliance with a foundation provided an appropriate relationship and agreement can be struck.

If OASIS can't bring one of its current members to the table or other corps don't value it enough then maybe there isn't as great a need for the group as we thought when we proposed it. Maybe I was naive and didn't get that "standards based", especially "open standards"  its just what the PR department says all the while understanding that the fundings going to the proprietray pot. If that's reality, so be it. And there are other standards groups and other corps out there...

I think we need a corporate sponsor to allow someone to take on this work without having to make a sacrifice to do it.

I see this group is in a desperate need for a face to face meeting with some spare time at the bar. No lack of subjects there.

Sorry for the lack of e-mails from my part. I had the introduction of the first national XBRL taxonomy overhere, a trip abroad and day's with not enough hours. I will come back to the list with some ideas one of these days

Peter,

Remember the tobacco industry - and a row of company executives entoning before Congress - 'Nicotine is not addictive'?

If you have not already seen it - check out the DVD "Supersize Me!", and notice how he became to crave eating the fat and sugar laden food that was making him ill - and felt a high when he did.

Then ask yourself - why are 60% percent of Americans clinically overweight, and for some minorities this reaches over 80% for members over the age of 30?  Target - lower income brackets - mass market.

50% of Americans used to smoke, with higher majority in the low-income, lesser educated.

Errrr, Kimosabi, is there some correlation here?

Just what additives are going into processed food - and what are we not being told?

That would be "nationwide unhealthy service", no? or are you really suggesting a national policy? The food giants actually working with government in formulating unhealthy policy? Surely not....

But some would argue that the US has the worlds finest National Unhealthy services - and that

giant corporations are toiling night and day to ensure citizen remain unhealthy so they

can exploit the situation for profit.

Self-maintenance can obviously save you a bunch of money here....

Doesn't want to imply...that the US has a national (read "public", certainly in Europe) health service? rather than a nationwide health service...

Hi Brett,

I believe it may simply be a matter of semantics. The person who made the statement (or as I understand the statement to mean) was Mary Forbes. She said that the name change was made because they did not want to imply ______ (and it's that blank that I don't recall).

Hope that helps - at least a bit.

Joe

Hi Joe, I suppose that change means something, but I don't know what it is?

I understand from yesterday's Data Reference Model (DRM) Public Forum
that the National Health Information Network is now going to be referred
to as the Nationwide Health Information Network.
