Subject: Liaison Status from P1619.3 to KMIP, 2009-06-03

Hi Folks,
Here's a quick update on activities in IEEE P1619.3 that are relevant
to KMIP. If there is time in today's meeting, I can quickly cover this
material and answer any questions:
- The P1619.3 task group is still pursuing ways to create an XML
grammar that is functionally equivalent to the KMIP binary
representation. However, to make this happen, it appears that there
needs to be some level of legal cooperation between OASIS and IEEE.
We're currently investigating these requirements.
- P1619.3 is interested in requesting that KMIP reserve a portion
of each vendor-specific range for use by P1619.3. This would be a
minor change to KMIP that shouldn't change any existing implementations
(but the group should check that the requested ranges haven't already
been allocated for vendor-specific purposes)
- The P1619.3 task group has deferred reviewing the P1619.3/KMIP
comparison spreadsheet until reaching a decision on adopting the KMIP
binary format. The implication of adopting the KMIP binary encoding is
that P1619.3 would also adopt the KMIP Objects and Operations model,
which is already very close to the existing P1619.3 model. This
decision is expected to happen at the June 17th SISWG Plenary meeting.
Thanks!
-Matt
