If both server and client can modify the attribute, then a means to prevent overwriting each other's data is needed.

I agree it adds complexity, and the most recent version restricts the server modifications to a degree we think ownership isn't required.

Are you recommending that the server be required to enforce this
ownership property on subsequent modifications or deletions?  Tracking
which entity set the value initially adds another dimension of
complexity to the server that isn't required by the current
