Subject: Fwd: "Organizational Views of NIST Standards and Certifications"

Some of you may find the linked document interesting reading. Kevin Mangold is a former OASIS TAB member and TC chair.Â

"The study involved 21 in-depth
interviews of 29 participants representing organizations that develop either a security product
that uses cryptography or a non-security product that heavily relies on cryptography. This
report categorizes and enumerates a subset of findings that document participant comments
specific to NIST cryptographic publications and testing/validation programs, with a goal of
informing future decisions of NIST and other standards bodies working in this space."

Hey Chet,

Â

I hope everything is going well! The document I mentioned a while back is published: https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/ir/2018/NIST.IR.8241.pdf Let me know if you / the TAB are able to use it.

Â

Regards,

Kevin

Â

Charter sailing in the Greek islands???? Ahhhhh! I really want to do that.Â

Â

I have been sailing since I was 12 and I have done lots of cruising. I forget how daunting it can be first time because it is second nature to me now. I chartered a 40' catamaran with friends down in the British Virgin Islands a couple of years back and now I want to try it out all over. Friends from my sailing club chartered in Greece last year and they are fluent so I'm hoping I can arrange a trip with them.Â

Â

By the way, even for all that time, I still get the wobbles for a while after I finally get off a boat.Â

Hey Chet,

Â

I just checked in with the author. It is almost finished going through our internal review process â if I had to guess, it will take another week or two. As for sharing it with the TAB, I would hope you do (the rest of the Board may find parts useful, too).

Â

My summer has been pretty good! I actually just got back on Sunday from a semi-sailing trip. My girlfriend, I, and another couple chartered a sailing yacht and hopped around a few of the Greek islands for a week. It was my first time spending more than a few hours on a boat (except for cruises) â still trying to get over the wobbles of being back on land. Do you (or a friend/family) know how to sail? It seems very involved!

Good morning Kevin. As requested, I'm writing to ask about the paper you told me about. I'm looking forward to reading it and also, if it is ok, sharing it with the TAB. It could be timely there because we are talking about things we want to do in the coming year.Â

Â

Hope your summer was enjoyable. I'm winding down sailing season up here.Â

Â

Best,Â

Chet,

Â

I am peer reviewing a paper for a colleague here. They interviewed 29 people from 21 organizations regarding their perception and experience with using NIST Standards. If I donât send you a link to the final, publisher version in the next 3-4 weeks, please bug me! All of the comments donât apply to OASIS because some of them youâve already addressed (through Statements of Use, open repos, etc.). Some of them apply to all standards in general, but I feel like OASIS has a better chance of addressing some of the issues than those (unnamed) organizations that have hundreds of people working for them and a strict hierarchical structure/set of policies.

Â

At the very least, it may be a good TAB project to boil down this document into a much shorter summary and pass it along to TC chairs and editors.
