This list has been set up to support discussion on the value and possibility of developing a markup standard for legal citations in a new OASIS Technical Committee. This discussion is also taking place in several groups on LinkedIn. Please feel free to join the discussion in either venue.
The discussion focuses on two key questions: Would there be value to the legal community in having an international, open, royalty- and license-free standard for marking up legal citations available? Would you or your organization be interested in joining the effort to develop it?
Several OASIS members with expertise in the legal field are discussing starting such a Technical Committee. By defining markup that would live behind the displayed page, we believe such a standard would enable a broad range of applications like cite normalization, de-duping, linking across nationalities, federated citation repositories, and more, all while avoiding the need to touch or alter the in-line text of a citation in any way.
To succeed, we believe such a project needs representation from all the stakeholder communities: legislatures and the judiciary, legal scholars and academics, professional organizations, practioners, software/service providers and last, but not least, legal publishers.
Please join the conversation and share your thoughts.
Best regards,
