Subject: President's Message to OASIS Members - January 2005
OASIS Members, As we close out 2004 and look forward to 2005, I wanted to take a few moments to thank you all for your support of the many important standards development and adoption programs at OASIS. Your involvement and feedback is what continues to make OASIS one of the most relevant and influential international, not-for-profit organizations. Operations Update The OASIS Board of Directors met last month and approved the 2005 Financial Budget for the consortium. They also approved the new Foundational Sponsor membership level. The Board's Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Committee continues to work thoughtfully on responding to the member comments which you provided on our proposed revisions to the OASIS IPR Policy and Membership Agreement. We expect to complete these revisions in early 2005. Colin Evans resigned his seat on the OASIS Board of Directors, effective 18 December 2004, due to schedule demands required by his evolving position at Intel. Colin has served on the OASIS Board since July 2001. As Board Chairman, he provided exceptional leadership, helping to facilitate tremendous growth, both in the size of our organization and breadth of our technical work. His skills at diplomacy and strategic vision have been instrumental in our success, and I personally have valued the opportunity of working closely with him. On behalf of my fellow OASIS Board Directors, staff, and members, I would like to thank Colin for his many years of service to the Consortium and wish him the very best of luck in his future endeavors. A special election will be held in January-February 2005 to fill the open Board seat, and I encourage you all to consider nominating an executive and participating thoughtfully in the balloting. Other staff changes during the past month include the departure of Karl Best and the promotion of Jamie Clark to Director of Standards Development and of Mary McRae to Manager of TC Administration. In addition, Andy Moir has joined OASIS as Director of Business Development. I am excited by the experience and innovation these directors and managers are bringing to OASIS, as they join with our other staff directors, Scott McGrath and Carol Geyer, to serve our members. New OASIS Standards OASIS members approved new OASIS Standards for Web Services Reliability (WS-Reliability) v1.1 and Universal Business Language (UBL) v1.0. Two new profiles developed by the OASIS Web Services Security (WSS) TC were also approved as OASIS Standards: the SAML Token Profile and the Rights Expression Language (REL) Token Profile for use with WSS: SOAP Message Security. These new OASIS Standards advance e-business in several very significant ways. WS-Reliability provides a standard, interoperable way to guarantee message delivery to applications or Web services. UBL delivers a much-needed XML library of business documents, such as purchase orders, invoices, etc. The new WSS profiles extend the utilization of WSS into additional application environments. Congratulations to all who participated in the development of these open standards. Looking Forward As OASIS continues its leadership role in developing and promoting open standards for e-Business, Web services, security and many other applications, it is important that we continue an aggressive program of collaboration with other related standards efforts. Recently, I was struck by a comment from Claus Hohmann, CTO of Volkswagen Autostadt GmbH, "Technology does not stand in the foreground, but rather the people -- with technology supporting the people. Integration of feeling within the realm of business is important." His presentation was one of many excellent speeches given at the Standards Edge: Future Generation conference last month. http://www.etsi.org/future_generation/agenda.htm I believe one of the ongoing challenges for OASIS is to continue to achieve results for and through its members, while seeking innovation through collaboration with governments, business enterprises and other nonprofit organizations. We will accomplish this by fostering a vibrant environment where all stakeholders--including our hundreds of unaffiliated individual members--work collaboratively to build and implement open standards. I seek your commitment and contribution as we continue to support our many communities of interest within OASIS. In A World of Ideas, Frances Hesselbein, examines the forces I see working within OASIS: "The main reason for this upsurge of volunteer participation ... is not the increase in need. The reason is the search for community, for commitment, and for contribution. ... A vital civil society is built upon the three legs of government, business, and nonprofit organizations. ... We have gained a renewed belief in two enduring truths: first, healthy societies are built on equally vibrant public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Second, the leaders of these three sectors must achieve results in their organizations while looking, working, and leading beyond the walls of their own enterprise. ... Innovation is an indispensable part of moving into the future, and it occurs mostly through collaboration." Today we have over 4,000 active participants working in collaboration from such diverse communities as government, legal, public safety, defense, aerospace, financial services, healthcare, automotive, telecommunications, manufacturing and building automation control. The OASIS staff and Board continues to seek new methods to better support our communities of members as we move forward in this next year. If you have recommendations, please take a moment to let me or any of our Board Directors know your views and suggestions. Also, be sure to mark your calendars and plan to attend the many activities around the OASIS Symposium in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, scheduled for the week of 24-29 April 2005. We wish you all a Joyous New Year. Best regards, Patrick Gannon President and CEO OASIS +1.978.667.5115 x201 www.oasis-open.org
