Subject: OASIS Accomplishments in 2007

31 January 2007

Dear OASIS Members,

As January comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the
many accomplishments we made together in 2007.

Sixteen OASIS Standards and 25 Committee Specifications were approved last
year. We launched five new Member Sections [1], and formed thirteen new
Technical Committees. We transitioned 20 TCs to operate under our current
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) policy [3] with designated modes of
patent licensing obligations. Of our 64 committees currently at work:

   * 52 operate in the 'Royalty-Free on Limited Terms' mode,
   * 11 operate in the 'Royalty-Free on RAND Terms' mode, and
   * only one operates in the 'Reasonable And Non-Discriminatory (RAND)'
mode.

The Board of Directors [4] approved a new Member Section Policy [5] and
provided updates to the OASIS Bylaws [6], and the Technical Committee
Process [7].

The OASIS China Office [8] was launched in early 2007, and a Chinese
translation of the OASIS web site was introduced [9]. With the support of
the ChangFeng Alliance [10], two very successful conferences were held in
Beijing in June and November

The new Take-A-Tour presentation [11] was added to the OASIS web site to
provide a brief, high level introduction on what our consortium is all
about. In addition, the XML.org Focus Area program was expanded. We now
host online communities for DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture),
ebXML (Electronic Business using Extensible Markup Language), OpenDocument,
and UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery & Integration) [12,13,14,15].
Members also laid the groundwork for four more XML.org sites.

The OASIS Technology Services Staff completed major updates to the website
and network infrastructure. A new Search feature [16] was enabled and a set
of management tools were provided for the organizational member primary
representatives. With many member companies having over 100 employees
participating in OASIS (and several with 500-700 employees), this was a
welcome administrative feature.

On behalf of the OASIS Board of Directors and Staff [17], I'd like to thank
you all and congratulate you on the accomplishments of 2007. OASIS members
are indeed playing a major role in advancing the global information society.

Best regards,

Patrick Gannon
