Subject: OASIS News: 17 Jun 2008
OASIS News 17 Jun 2008 Welcome to OASIS News, a bi-weekly update of announcements, accomplishments, and activities for the international open standards consortium. ------------------------------------------------------------------- In this issue: * OASIS welcomes new Executive Director * SAML XML.org officially launches * XRI 2.0 ballots narrowly miss passage as OASIS Standards * OASIS forms OAXAL TC * Board and TAB elections close soon * Members seek feedback on XSPA TC draft charter * Public review begins for WS-TX specs * Public review begins for Subject Profiles for SAML 1.1 Assertions * Burton Group analyst will keynote at OASIS Forum on Security ------------------------------------------------------------------- OASIS welcomes new Executive Director Effective 23 June, Laurent Liscia will take on leadership of the consortium. Laurent brings more than 12 years of experience as CEO or COO of various IT companies. With a doctorate from the Sorbonne University, he speaks English, French, Spanish, and Italian and has worked in France, Canada, Italy, Ecuador, Morocco and the United States. Laurent holds dual US and European citizenship and currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/members/200806/msg00004.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- SAML XML.org officially launches The latest addition to the XML.org family of community web sites is dedicated to supporting the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML). All pages on SAML XML.org are accessible by the public, and users are encouraged to contribute content. The site features a wiki knowledgebase of information on using and understanding SAML. It also includes sections where readers can post related news, event information, listings for products and services, links to white papers, case studies, and other resources. Forums that support interactive discussions and blogs are also featured. The OASIS Security Services TC provides editorial oversight for SAML XML.org; the site is sponsored by Sun Microsystems and Ping Identity. http://saml.xml.org ------------------------------------------------------------------- XRI 2.0 ballots narrowly miss passage as OASIS Standards In the third highest vote turnout in OASIS history, XRI Syntax 2.0 and XRI Resolution 2.0 failed this month to gain approval as OASIS Standards. Although 74% of votes cast favored ratification, the specifications were unable to pass because they received more negative votes than the 25% threshold prescribed by the OASIS TC process. The TC plans to continue driving forward work on XRI, which is already in production in a number of companies and communities around the world. TC members will be reaching out to those who opposed passage in an effort to fully understand their reservations and reconcile issues prior to the next release of the XRI specifications. http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/tc-announce/200806/msg00001.html http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/tc-announce/200806/msg00000.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- OASIS forms OAXAL TC All interested parties are invited to participate in the new OASIS Open Architecture for XML Authoring and Localization Reference Model (OAXAL) TC. This group will define a method to exploit technical documentation assets by extending the usefulness of core XML-related standards in a comprehensive open standards-based architecture. The OAXAL TC will operate under the RF on Limited Terms Mode under the OASIS IPR Policy. Andrzej Zydron serves an convenor; a TC chair will be elected at the first meeting, which will be held by teleconference on 14 July. http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/tc-announce/200806/msg00008.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Board and TAB elections close soon Before the 19 June deadline, each Foundational, Sponsor, and Contributor member of OASIS is encouraged to vote for the six open seats on the Board of Directors and four open seats on the Technical Advisory Board (TAB). Board of Directors' candidates include Rik Drummond of the Drummond Group, Bob Freund of Hitachi, Patrick Gannon of Javola Technology, Bob Glushko of the University of California at Berkeley, Frederick Hirsch of Nokia, Jim Hughes of Microsoft, Paul Knight of Nortel, and Jeff Mischkinsky of Oracle. TAB candidates include Abbie Barbir of Nortel, Toby Considine of the University of North Carolina, Jacques Durand of Fujitsu, and Andy Lee of Changfeng. http://www.oasis-open.org/private/elections/2008board/ http://www.oasis-open.org/private/elections/2008tab/ ------------------------------------------------------------------- Members seek feedback on XSPA TC draft charter All interested parties are asked to review and comment on a draft charter to establish the OASIS Cross-Enterprise Security and Privacy Authorization (XSPA) TC. XSPA will define a mechanism for healthcare enterprises to exchange privacy policies, consent directives and authorizations in an interoperable manner. The XSPA profile will require the participation of subject matter experts in several areas, including WS-Federation, SAML, and WS-Trust. XSPA TC proposers include representatives of Cisco, Red Hat, the U.S. Veterans Health Administration, and others. The comment period for this draft charter closes 23 Jun. http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/tc-announce/200806/msg00007.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Public review begins for WS-TX specs The OASIS Web Services Transaction (WS-TX) TC has approved WS-AtomicTransaction 1.2, WS-Business Activity 1.2, WS-Coordination 1.2 as Committee Drafts and submitted them for public review. The three specifications define protocols for coordinating the outcome of distributed application actions. This public review ends 12 Aug. http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/tc-announce/200806/msg00010.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Public review begins for Subject Profiles for SAML 1.1 Assertions The OASIS Security Services (SAML) TC has approved Subject-Based Profiles for SAML 1.1 Assertions as a Committee Draft and submitted it for public review. The profile places constraints on SAML 1.1 subjects and assertions so that they have properties similar to SAML 2.0 subjects and assertions. This public review ends 12 Aug. http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/tc-announce/200806/msg00009.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- Burton Group analyst will keynote at OASIS Forum on Security Gerry Gebel, Vice President and Service Director for Burton Group Identity and Privacy Strategies, will provide a keynote address at the upcoming Open Standards Forum hosted by OASIS IDtrust.
