Subject: Re: [mgmtprotocol] mptc minutes of Dec 4
The minutes are not quite correct. Modifications are: In this exercise, Ellen rendered CIM elements to WSDL elements using the CIM_OperatingSystem class, specifically focusing on the service data element definitions from the OGSI work. This rendering is not a complete port type / service definition (doesn't yet account for other needed aspects such as identity and relationships to other port types, etc). Conclusions: Ellen observes that in the portType rendering of the CIM_OperatingSystem class, some properties modifiable (CIM qualifier=WRITE) but are not marked as such and needs to be revisited in CIM. Port types also support multiple inheritance, which CIM does not. It was also observed that it would be possible to enable CIM-to-WSDL mapping through a simple algorithmic tool, but this would not yield anything useful for implementation but rather only to provide a set on which to develop the port type and service definitions; this is analogous to the observations and work done to map CIM to LDAP with useable LDIF definitions. Conclusions: Ellen concludes that, aside for some small items for which CIM does not have a vocabulary (e.g., you cannot indicate in CIM whether or not service data is modifiable), it would be possible to enable CIM-to-WSDL mapping through a simple algorithmic tool, but the CIM does not contribute anything useful from a programmatic point of view. Discussion: The TC discussed: § The difficulty of supporting multi-model environments and the requirement for a model-agnostic specification. § The advantages and disadvantages of building on the work of the OGSI, W3C, DMTF, and other locations. Are we ready to build on this works-in-progress, given that they have not yet been approved by any standards organizations? Action: At the next TC meeting, we will continue this discussion, narrowing in on possible proposals for the future work of this committee. Continued discussion via e-mail is encouraged since Ellen will be unavailable after Dec. 16.
