OASIS News
22 May 2006

Welcome to OASIS News, a weekly update of announcements, accomplishments, and
activities for the international standards consortium.

ISO and IEC Approve OpenDocument OASIS Standard

The International Standards Organization (ISO) and the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) recently approved the OpenDocument OASIS
Standard. The format was developed and continues to be advanced by the OASIS
OpenDocument TC, and its use is promoted by the OASIS ODF Adoption Committee.
Defining an open XML file format for office applications, the standard is
suitable for text, spreadsheets, charts, graphs, presentations, and databases.
The format frees documents from their applications-of-origin, enabling them to
be exchanged, retrieved, and edited with any OpenDocument-compliant software or
tool. OpenDocument has been given the designation, ISO/IEC 26300.
