Subject: RE: [oasis-board-comment] Re: [board-agenda] Draft agenda for Board meeting, 2-3 May 2012, Paris
Unfortunately, although Paris was selected BECAUSE on Friday, May 4, Laurent was “setting up a seminar with "DISIC", which is a technology directorate attached to the French Prime Minister's office. The seminar will focus on standards for eGov, and the Large-Scale European Projects; it will be in French and I'm scrambling to find a translator. There will be a mixer with prospects after that meeting (also in French).” However, he later informed the Board: “Well, the best-laid plans... DISIC, which is the IT arm of the Prime Minister's office in Paris, is willing to host an OASIS/AFNET seminar, but not on the topics we proposed - rather, on Cloud. Well then, we shall brief them on Cloud and the standards efforts occurring there. Astonishingly I was also told that the budget for translation would not be covered since everyone present was expected to speak French. Then again, the program has not been confirmed. This essentially means that none of you will understand much of what is being said, and therefore I must contritely recommend that you not attend and spend some time visiting the city, which will be beautiful that time of year.” So, Eduardo is correct: “A meeting in Paris just to talk to employees from IBM, HP, MS and Oracle? Ah, yes, and one Commission member! Really? This is the best you can do? Sounds like a wasted opportunity. And a waste of money too, if you ask me.” This is not the first time the Board has been left out of meetings in Europe that were supposed to include Board Members. I was planning to (and still will) bring this up in Paris, but I feel it is necessary to correct Peter’s response to Eduardo. Interestingly, neither the OASIS Board Members associated with IBM or HP, nor Peter, will be physically attending the meeting in Paris.

Hi Eduardo, That is the “extent of it” within the formal Board agenda – but there is also a further separate event on the Friday with a range of French government public officials, talking about open standards.
As you know, planning F2F meetings always needs to be done months in advance, so that Board members can process travel authorizations and approvals, etc., and sometimes you just have to aim and fire before being 100% certain of scoring a direct hit in terms of invited guests, themes for discussion, etc.. That said, the panel brings together EU specialists from within our community (who would not normally have dealings with the Board) as well as the European Commission, and the Board finds that useful in its own deliberations on the impact of future EU legislation on the world of standardization. Hope this helps! Regards, Peter From: Eduardo Gutentag [mailto:egutentag@gmail.com] Really? A meeting in Paris just to talk to employees from IBM, HP, MS and Oracle?
