Subject: Dynamic Configuration of new Devices

At this week’s meeting, there was discussion about dynamic configuration of a set of systems managed by OBIX to deal with the arrival and departure of systems. This issue came up associated with some of the issues surrounding the Smart TV Alliances use of OBIX in the residential environment.

Today, on the WS-Calendar call, there was discussion of the new JSON encodings for calendar and vcard information that will soon be released into the IETF. In the calendaring world vcard is the primary means of passing information about a person or a resource that may potentially be scheduled. Recent work in the IETF has led to standard XML encodings of iCalendar (which was done in parallel with WS-Calendar) and of vcard.

This conversation then morphed into discussions of Automated Service Configuration in the IETF (see below).

I am sharing this because

(1)    It may intersect nicely with  the work by our Smart TV members

(2)    We may want to consider some of the same approaches within the advanced services of 2.0

Previous conversations have already included notions such as:

(a)    The BIM Card, the resource description / VCARD for a [room] expressed  using semantics borrowed from BIM

(b)   What is the Resource Description of a Building System Component, say an air handler

I am not sure how these fit together, but I wanted to introduce them to the group.
