Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (ODATA-263) Remove $select=*

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/ODATA-263?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=32359#action_32359 ]

Hubert Heijkers commented on ODATA-263:

I am missing the link here a bit. Not returning navigation properties because they can be deduced by the metadata is a result of the metadata preference and in my mind has nothing to do with the select. IMHO navigation properties, selected or not, are effectively returned if you are not using full metadata but they are not part of the JSON response.
My counter question here being, how would you indicate that you do want all properties, and navigation properties in case of full metadata, to be returned if we remove this?

> Remove $select=*
> ----------------
> Key: ODATA-263
> URL: http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/ODATA-263
> Project: OASIS Open Data Protocol (OData) TC
> Issue Type: Improvement
> Components: OData ABNF Construction Rules v1.0, OData URL Conventions v1.0
> Affects Versions: WD01
> Environment: [Proposed]
> Reporter: Ralf Handl
> Fix For: WD01
> The URL conventions state that
> If the selectItem is a star, then all properties and navigation properties on the matching resources MUST be returned.
> This conflicts with the JSON format which by default does not return navigation properties and only includes them when odata.metadata=full is requested.
> The recent enhancements to $expand which allows nesting e.g. a $select further reduces the need for $select=*, so it's best to remove it altogether.
