Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Updated: (ODATA-9) allow expressions in the $select query option
[ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/ODATA-9?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel ] Michael Pizzo updated ODATA-9: ------------------------------ Proposal: We have laid the necessary groundwork for adding this type of functionality in the future without breaking V4 clients. Defer the work required to define such an extension to a future version of OData. Environment: [Proposed] Note that $select is probably not the right place to introduce properties. Currently, $select is really just a serialization hint that says "I care only about these properties". Services are explicitly allowed to ignore the $select clause altogether and return full results. Similar to $expand and $aggregate, if we want to shape/extend the results we should do so in a separate query option and have $select operate over that expanded/extended/shaped result. This allows such expressions to be used in other parts of the request such as aggregates or ordering. I do note that, by requiring that clients be prepared to handle properties not defined in metadata, we have laid the necessary groundwork for adding an extension to return dynamic/calculated properties in the future without breaking existing clients. I suggest we don't try and add this functionality at this time. > allow expressions in the $select query option > --------------------------------------------- > > Key: ODATA-9 > URL: http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/ODATA-9 > Project: OASIS Open Data Protocol (OData) TC > Issue Type: Improvement > Components: OData Protocol , OData URL Conventions > Environment: [Proposed] > Reporter: Andrew Eisenberg > Assignee: Michael Pizzo > > OData could be extended to allow expressions in the $select query option, allowing derived values to be returned along with the properties of an entity. > This could be expressed as: > http://odata.netflix.com/v2/Catalog/Titles?$select=Name,substring(ShortSynopsis,20) as Summary > or > http://odata.netflix.com/v2/Catalog/Titles?$select=Name&$extendedSelect=substring(ShortSynopsis,20) as Summary -- This message is automatically generated by JIRA. - If you think it was sent incorrectly contact one of the administrators: http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/secure/Administrators.jspa - For more information on JIRA, see: http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira
