Subject: Re: [office-collab] Additional Use Cases

Hi Frank,

The use case list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of everything that needs change tracking capabilities. It originates from test cases we used as proof-of-concept examples for the DeltaXML proposal and as this is a generic solution, we only needed to look at certain types of change rather than looking at changes to every feature of ODF.

The way I see it, as ODF is an XML format, any change can be represented by adding the capability to track changes to generic XML (i.e. add/delete/modify attribute, add/delete elements and add/delete text). As long as these XML changes can be represented, it is technically possible to mark any change to ODF.
These capabilities do not necessarily give an optimal representation of the kind of changes that occur when editing a document (e.g. to split a paragraph in two, you must delete the original paragraph and add the two new ones) and so additional constructs such as the split and merge in the proposal can be added to enable a more optimal representation.

The zip package representation of ODF does throw up some more problems, such as handling changes to images as has already been mentioned by Rob I think, but a generic change representation is most of the way towards a solution.

Regards,
Tristan

One the other hand there are specific items like C.1 (Table Addition). If the list only serves as a loose reminder of what to take into account when working on the proposal without claiming completeness, I'm fine with it. Otherwise we also need to add sections, frames, draw shapes, annotations, a whole bunch of different style elements, don't forget spreadsheets and presentations, you name it.
