Subject: Defining Editor Features (document-centric user actions)

I have been reviewing emails to see if there are areas of consensus where perhaps we could do some useful work that would be valid and useful whatever direction we go in - and would help towards that decision.

Frank made some good points in his email
http://www.oasis-open.org/apps/org/workgroup/office-collab/email/archives/201104/msg00060.html
and his last point was this:

6) We have to make sure that interoperability with the Microsoft Office Products can be achieved (at least on the feature level). This holds true for the GCT Proposal, most likely this also holds for the ECT Proposal.

Robin commented "Yes. But as the features in Word and ODF applications are constantly changing, this is a moving target so CT needs to have flexibility to respond to changing needs."

John H commented "Actually, this is an interesting question.  Do we have a sense of how much the scope of change tracking support in common applications is evolving?  My sense is that the set of document-centric user actions where change tracking is valuable is fairly well-defined and stable.  Of course, this question is more qualitative than quantitative, so I’m curious what others’ perspectives are."

My understanding is that the ECT aims to cover each one in a specific way, and if we use GCT then there would need to be some meta-information to identify a CT as being of a specific type.

Whichever way we go with syntax, we will need to define these "document-centric user actions" in some way. This seems necessary and useful work which just needs to be done. Rob suggested we drill down into one or two cases in detail, so this list would provide a good starting point to select these.

1. Does such a list exist? If not, how do we produce it? (I imagine this ranges from add text, delete text, format text, through to add row/column, clear formatting, change font on selected text etc.) If you have a list, please add it to the wiki.

2. Bearing in mind Frank's point, could John/Doug produce a list for Word so we can check against this?

3. How can we best define each action in terms of the CT requirements in ODF? Could anyone suggest a formal or semi-formal way to do this?

I am hoping that a list exists already!

Robin
