My sincere apologies - I was misled by my Excel book (Paul McFedries "Formulas and Functions with Microsoft Excel 2003", pg 152) which says the fourth argument is the "number of replacements to make". I tried it with Excel 2003 today, and it certainly does work the way the spec describes. Sorry about the noise. Brad
