Another alternative would be to pick a RE language
and standardize on it for this use. That's the approach I'd prefer.
If we make it a mode, then all implementations who wish to be interoperable
will need to support all modes. And all future implementations will
need to implement all modes. But if we choose a single one now, then
some implementations will need to change, but it is a one-time hit, and
future implementations are then freed from the burden of supporting multiple
ways of doing the same thing.
