Let me try to diagram this. xml:id ====== document paragraph <--- properties meta:about ========== document paragraph ---> properties meta:property ============= document paragraph ---> predicate ---> object So first two establish a subject and allow properties to be attached to them (though with different meanings), the last a relationship between the subject (the paragraph or document or whatever) and an object. As an example, there are a bunch of existing fields (author, title, etc.) that are in fact properties of the document. Using meta:property is a way to make this more generic, and adding meta:about to make the subject reference generic (not only about the document or its contents). Bruce
