I think the reason why people would want to 'interleave' their custom markup with the OpenDocument markup is that this makes it realy easy to apply your custom markup to specific parts of the document without bothering on how you would reference it otherwise. This still is a bit like XForms, where you use bindings to connect content and data. Maybe it would make sense to think about whether the binding concept that we have introduced for XForms might be extended to other parts of the format...
