Subject: Formal Request: ODF 1.2 Document Structure Proposal
I formally request consideration of the proposal "ODF 1.2 Document Structure" for ODF 1.2. The new proposal document with an incomplete sketch is on the wiki at http://wiki.oasis-open.org/office/ODF_1.2_Document_Structure My promise is to have this proposal complete enough on the Wiki to have serious discussion commence on the wiki by January 1, 2009. It is my intention that work on this proposal could continue along with editorial work for review of the working drafts, resolution of editorial items, and review concerning applicability of public comments to earlier versions of ODF. Whether the proposal can be treated in this manner can be determined as part of laying out the end-game beyond the completion of feature-related proposals. The brief description of the proposal is: "Define the structure within and among the artifacts that comprise the representation of a single ODF document. Account for variations among the specified document types, for variations with regard to (version) conformance, and for variations among * XML-document components that are defined by the specification, * non-XML components and packagings defined by the specification, * other components (XML-documents and otherwise) recognized by but not defined by the specification. "Increasing the precision of document-structure definition is important with respect to * definition of conformance, validity, and well-formedness * clarification of the relationships among ODF-specified components * reconciliation of the relationship among components that are packaged together but not explicitly linked, components that are packaged together and explicitly linked, and components that are connected by linking but not packaging" - Dennis Dennis E.
