Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-1556) Editor Note: Section8.3.3 <table:operation>

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-1556?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=12425#action_12425 ]

Eike Rathke commented on OFFICE-1556:
-------------------------------------

There seems to be some misconception what detective operations exactly
are. In particular, they are completely unrelated to hidden cells, this
seems to be an error of the original description. Instead, they
visualize the dependencies between formula cells. For example:

A1: =B1+C1
B1: =B2+B3
C1: =C2+C3

Applying trace-precedents on A1 displays traces B1->A1 and C1->A1,
applying trace-precedents a second time on A1 goes one level deeper and
additionally displays traces B2->B1, B3->B1, C2->C1 and C3->C1. Applying
remove-precedents on A1 removes traces B2->B1, B3->B1, C2->C1 and C3->C1.

Another scenario:
Applying trace-precedents on A1 displays traces B1->A1 and C1->A1,
applying trace-precedents on B1 displays traces B2->B1 and B3->B1.
Applying remove-precedents on A1 (!) removes traces B2->B1 and B3->B1.

So, remove-precedents respectively remove-dependents act on the deepest
possible level of a trace-precedents respectively trace-dependents
displayed for the cell where the remove-* operation is applied to.

Hope that clarifies, if unclear, play with an example in Calc using menu
Tools->Detective->...

> Ed. Note: The wording "certain relations" seems really vague to me. Granted it is only storing the results of some operation but shouldn't that be defined somewhere?
