OK, but language that I removed as inappropriate for <table:subtotal-rules> (as the container element for <table:subtotal-rule> elements):

"Provisional results, the cell values of a row or column are grouped by their value, that is, all cells with the same content in the same field form a group. A provisional result is calculated and displayed at the end of each group."

Seems to be at odds or at least not the same as:

table:field-number: The table:field-number number attribute specifies a row or column number to sort, subtotal or filter. It is the number of a row or column within a database range.

That says (to me at any rate) that the content of a specified row or column is identified for purposes of sorting, subtotals or filters. 

Is there something else I have overlooked that does the grouping by value type? (Realizing that table:cell, etc., have value type attributes but it isn't explicit where those get considered for subtotaling.)
