I think the addition of the already-defined <table:named-expressions> element under <table:table> is useful and appropriate in ODF 1.2 part 1.  

I see three considerations that must be made explicit:

1. The search resolution for a named expression needs to be made explicit.  It must also be explicit whether a named-expression reference must be resolvable for a valid ODF document, and if that is not required, it must be explicit what the default behavior is when there is no resolution of a named-expression reference, or whether it is implementation defined.

2. The <table:named-expression> elements should permit namespace prefixes on their values and the default case (and use of "=") needs to be made precise.

3. There must be clear definition of the way references in a named expression are bound to actual features, taking into account the context and location of the formula that is making use of the named expression.  (E.g., for relative references, what are the references relative to given use from a particular formula location.  Likewise for resolution of named-expression references in the named expression.)
