Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-734) Public Comment:Statistical SUMMARY() function

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-734?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=15247#action_15247 ]

Andreas Guelzow commented on OFFICE-734:

I believe the author of the comment confuses missing application features with missing ODF functions.

It is of course useful to have a mechanism to create a descriptive statistical output for a dataset.

Excel has a menu item that creates a one-time snapshot of the data. As the comment author points out this has the drawback of not changing with the data.

We can contrast this with Gnumeric which also has a menu item but by using it the user effectively enters an appropriate selection of functions calls. This is much more flexible that a summary function that would need various options to be adjustable tot he needs of the user, and that once entered would be rather opaque since it would virtully impossible to tell that the output in the third cell of such an array function is the mean.
