OK, starting with the text:

"For styles with family text which are applied to an element which defines character content of a paragraph (see 5.1.1), the paragraph style assigned to the paragraph ancestor element and its parent styles are searched next. If a value for the formatting property has not been found, the search continues as defined for styles with family paragraph."

Style search steps:

1. style applied to element has no value but style has a parent style, 

2. immediate parent style has no value so search up parent styles until either formatting property is found or style with no parent style (btw, I have had a question about using property = attribute for translation purposes)

Now we are at the start of the new text: 

3. "For styles with family text which are applied to an element which defines character content of a paragraph (see 5.1.1), the paragraph style assigned to the paragraph ancestor element and its parent styles are searched next."

Err, by "paragraph ancestor element" do you mean the <text:p> element that contains a child element as defined in 4.1.3? 

Hmmm, to re-say: 

"For styles where style:family 18.479 has the value text, applied to the child elements of a paragraph which define character content 5.1.1, the style applied to the paragraph containing those elements is searched for the formatting property. If the formatting property is not found, the parent styles, if any, of the style applied to the containing paragraph are searched until the formatting property is found or a style is found with no parent style."

Apologies for being overly verbose but that seems clearer, if that is what you meant. (I was confused by the paragraph ancestor element" language because at first I thought you meant the ancestor of the paragraph.
