Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-2450)Precisely-represented Integers not differentiated from Imprecise Integers

Dennis Hamilton commented on OFFICE-2450:
-----------------------------------------

Thanks Andreas,

I understand about the forward reference problem now. Thanks for clarifying that.

Yes, the statements about mathematical floor(*n*)=ceil(*n*) is tautologous. I propose moving it into a note in my previous comment. I am happy to remove the note and the two bullet items. Speaking of exactly-represented mathematical integers is certainly sufficient.

I am looking at sharper ways to be clear when speaking of mathematical numbers versus speaking of Number types as unspecified but exact representations of a finite subset of mathematical numbers. When I have something less clumsy, I will revise the text of this proposal.

Suggestions for better, clear-cut terminology usage would be very helpful. Meanwhile I will see if there are published sources that provide a nomenclature that can be adapted to the OpenFormula case. I don't think my personal library has anything that separates the abstractions properly without appealing to a specific representation.

> The definition of Integer includes a wide range of values that have no fractional part but that are too large to represent integers precisely, there being gaps and even no non-Integer Number values in their vicinity.
> This prevents careful limitation and definition of those functions that require precise integer values to be specified for parameters and to be determined as results. It also leads to ambiguity and situations such as those illustrated in OFFICE-2209, OFFICE-846, and others invovling specific functions that are only meaningful when precise integer values are involved.
