I think that "All spreadsheet implementations seem to do automatic conversions and a basis is converted by them into a DateParam if required" is not quite right.
The reality is that there are only a very few REAL types in existing evaluators, and each of them has a corresponding IS* function: ISNUMBER(), ISTEXT(), ISERROR(), etc.
We could logically define functions and *only* say that their parameters are of type "Number", "Text", etc., and then describe in the function text in more detail what the constraints are. While that would be accurate, it would be less helpful to readers. Many parameters share common limitations that look remarkably like subtypes.
We *could* call them subtypes, if that helps.
