Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-2322) NEEDS-DISCUSSION:Input Constraints for Arabic Function

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-2322?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=18149#action_18149 ]

David Wheeler  commented on OFFICE-2322:
----------------------------------------

This was discussed on the 2010-03-23 teleconference; see the posted notes for all the details.

The basic idea was to state a minimum, as long as it doesn't forbid extensions.
The intended minimum is that "The ARABIC function shall be able to correctly translate any sequence
that ROMAN can produce in either upper or lower case".
Some implementations implement "extended" roman numerals, e.g., "VVVX" is -5;
we want to neither forbid nor require this.

So change "The following identity holds..." to "The following identity shall hold", and
remove "The symbols V, L and D may not be followed by a symbol of greater or equal value."

The key thing is that we want the 'open' cases well-defined, even if not everyone implements them.

> It's unclear in the spec (5.19.2) whether "non-traditional" roman numerals are supported as input strings. For example, are things like IIIV or IIVI expected to work? The spec needs more detail here.
