Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-2295) STDEVA

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-2295?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=18352#action_18352 ]

Dennis Hamilton commented on OFFICE-2295:
-----------------------------------------

I just assumed this was a simple matter of definition. In looking at the definitions of STDEV, STDEVA, STDEVP, and STDEVPA, though, it dawned on me how serious it is to treat non-numerical values as 0.

Has this been given serious discussion? Considering that implementations of STDEVA are apparently all over the map, maybe this is a function to leave out or somehow deprecate?

The problem is that inserting values as 0 has serious impact on the results, because it changes the value of "n" and it also change the value of the mean, (x-overline). The introduction of 0 values can be quite serious in terms of the quality of the result.

I just want to make sure we understand the consequences of that approach, rather than leaving the STDEVA case for non-numeric values in the sample as implementation-defined (or even implementation-dependent and deprecated). It looks like there is no way to reconcile the behavior of different implementations or of formulas converted from different current implementtions.

PS: It would be nice to have one of these determine an error value whenever the sample/set included cells/values that don't yield Number values.

PPS: I don't think it is useful to have LEGACY.* variants that allow conversion from other formulas. I don't think that is satisfying here because there is no way to convert among those variants and each other or whatever non-legacy cases are included in the OpenFormula specification.
